Influence of cough airflow characteristics on respiratory mucus clearance

چکیده

A cough is a respiratory reflex for mucus clearance. The airflow dynamics can be characterized by three parameters, which are peak flow rate (CPFR), velocity time (PVT), and expired volume (CEV). In this study, the three-dimensional human airways from generation 0 to 5 reconstructed computerized tomography images. non-Newtonian property of considered. airflow–mucus interaction phenomenon has been analyzed in space based on Eulerian wall film model. maximum air shear stress could reach 38 m/s 14 Pa, respectively, when CPFR 6 L/s. addition, influence CPFR, PVT, CEV clearance studied. efficiency used quantify results showed that increasing no noticeable effect under normal low viscosity. Increasing effectively improve viscosity becomes high. Specifically, an apparent positive clearing regardless thickness. This study provides new research direction improving rather than patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, neuromuscular or other diseases.

A new paradigm in respiratory hygiene: modulating respiratory secretions to contain cough bioaerosol without affecting mucus clearance

BACKGROUND Several strategies and devices have been designed to protect health care providers from acquiring transmissible respiratory diseases while providing care. In modulating the physical characteristics of the respiratory secretions to minimize the aerosolization that facilitates transmission of airborne diseases, a fundamental premise is that the prototype drugs have no adverse effect on...

Effective mucus clearance is essential for respiratory health.

Studies of the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis (CF) and primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), as well as novel genetic mouse models, vividly illustrate that effective “mucus clearance” is a critical innate airway defense mechanism. Modern physics, physical chemistry, biochemistry, and cell and systems biology are revealing the structure of the mucus clearance apparatus and elucidating key parameter...

Effects of drugs on mucus clearance.

Mucociliary clearance (MCC), the process in which airway mucus together with substances trapped within are moved out of the lungs, is an important defence mechanism of the human body. Drugs may alter this process, such that it is necessary to know the effect of the drugs on MCC. Indeed, agents stimulating MCC may be used therapeutically in respiratory medicine, especially in patients suspected ...

Effect of temazepam on tracheobronchial mucus clearance.

BACKGROUND Tracheobronchial clearance of mucus from the lungs is reduced during sleep and, usually, by the administration of opiates. It seemed possible therefore that temazepam, a widely used potent benzodiazepine, retarded clearance. METHODS The effect of 10 mg temazepam on mucociliary clearance was studied in eight healthy volunteers, aged 18-50 (mean 30) years, in a randomised, placebo co...

Detection of Mouse Cough Based on Sound Monitoring and Respiratory Airflow Waveforms

Detection for cough in mice has never yielded clearly audible sounds, so there is still a great deal of debates as to whether mice can cough in response to tussive stimuli. Here we introduce an approach for detection of mouse cough based on sound monitoring and airflow signals. 40 Female BALB/c mice were pretreated with normal saline, codeine, capasazepine or desensitized with capsaicin. Single...
